Chickenpox!

Chickenpox
Chickenpox
Chickenpox

Well, we got the chickenpox!

Helen has been pretty miserable the last few days from the itchiness.

The yellow stuff on her head in the first two photos is a mixture of Swedish Bitters and goldenseal. The white stuff on her head in the last photo is homemade calamine lotion. The calamine really helped to sooth.

Here's hoping we get over this soon! We had a night where I got about three hours of sleep. Ugh.

How old were you/your kids when you got the chickenpox?

    1. Thanks - I like to keep my blog "G" rated as much as possible, just so I offend as few people as possible. :)

    1. Yes, I'm glad that she has the immunity now! Not looking forward to dealing with it with any future kids. :)

  3. My two eldest were four. Youngest was vaccinated and never got them. They are miserable and open the door for shingles when you are older.

    1. I don't remember them being nearly as miserable when I had them as a kid! I guess different people react to them differently. My cousin's kids got this same round and they had a much milder reaction.

  4. All were 6 and under. What a messy childhood disease. I think they have a vaccine for it now. My DH and I recently got the shingles vaccine, because it can be even nastier than chicken pox.

    1. Yep, there's a vaccine now! I prefer that my kids get the natural, long-lasting immunity. I definitely hope I never get shingles! :)

  5. My mother in law just had shingles and said it was so much worse than anything she's ever experienced :-( There's a vaccine that protects you against shingles too :-)! Good luck little Helen and hope this runs its course asap!

  6. Erica, please get your children vaccinated. There is no reason not to. Better a mild reaction to a vaccination than a lengthy hospital stay or crippling disability. Don't fall for the anti-vaccination nonsense.

Arsenic and tetanus are natural too.

    1. Actually, Helen would be too young for the Varicella vaccine. The chicken pox vaccine is not given until children are 4 or 5 years old. It also has to be given several times.

  7. She is too young for the varicella vaccine. She is not too young for MMR and Pertussis vaccines. I work in healthcare and there has been a dangerous uptick in childhood diseases in the past ten years due to people not vaccinating their little ones. I'm 55 and I can remember children contracting polio when I was a little girl.

  8. Interestingly enough, I just did a lot of research on the MMR vaccine for a Chemistry class. I found this article, which shows some recent research that some childhood diseases, such as measles, may be very beneficial to children's immune systems in the long run.

    For what it's worth! :)

    1. That's very interesting! I have read about the dangers of vaccines, but I had never heard that natural illnesses can help to prevent other diseases. Thanks for sharing!

  9. I got German Measles when I was five but haven't had chicken pox yet...which makes me selfishly afraid more for myself if my kids get it someday (which, like you, I halfway hope they do). I'm just afraid of scarring cause I'm older!
